One thing I love about it is that no two finished artworks look the same. There are infinite ways to decorate the negative space in every section of every artwork.

Feel free to put your own spin on these activities and adapt them for different age groups.
Older kids, teens and adults can create more detailed patterns. Younger artists may not have the patience for fine details and are probably better off sticking to regular markers.
5 Tips for Positive Negative Art beginners
- Continuity is key, so begin by dividing your negative space into a uniform series of shapes. For example, a starburst pattern, square grid lines, vertical lines or scallops. You can make this easier with a background guideline grid (more info on this below).
- Use the theme as inspiration for the details within each section. For example, with leaves, take a closer look at the lines and textures nature provides and start with those. For insects, look at the patterns on real bugs. For Halloween, think of the lines and shapes within spiderwebbing, candy corn, and a starlit sky.
- Practice your doodle and colour scheme on a blank sheet of paper before applying it to your artwork
- Use our free doodle art swatch sheet for pattern sample ideas and blank practice swatches
- Get creative with materials. Try a combination of thick markers, fine liners for detail, and paint markers for white or light colour over dark.

How To Create Positive Negative Art
This activity is as easy as 1-2-3-4!
- Print the shapes to coloured cardstock.
- Cut the shapes out.
- Arrange in a positive/negative pattern.
- Doodle away!
Make Patterning easier with a Line Art Grid
Optionally, you can also use one of the 16 pattern background grids included as a bonus file.
The steps remain the same, except the shapes are glued to a page with a grid in place of a blank sheet of paper. This creates a continuous guideline for the baseline uniformity that patterning requires.

Of course, you can also draw your own patterns completely freehand. It’s up to you!
