Want to make some colourful Christmas wall art? Look no further than the kitchen cupboard for some potatoes!

Potato stamping is a classic for a reason. It’s easy, cheap, fun and versatile.

With this activity, there is plenty of room for kids to add their own creative flair. Older kids can create more detailed patterns using Posca pens (affiliate link). Younger kids can still do this activity with some adult help.

In addition to wall art, these festive bauble designs could be used for DIY Christmas cards, gift wrap and gift tags.

How to make Potato Stamp Bauble Art

You Will Need

  • Potatoes in various sizes – you will need 1 potato for every 2 colours you wish to stamp
  • Art paper or cardstock
  • Acrylic paint in bright colours
  • Paint brush
  • Black Marker
  • Ruler
  • Q-tips, fine paint brush or Posca pens for patterning (or a combination of these)

How to

Use a ruler and marker to draw lines on your page for string. End the lines where you wish to stamp the bauble so it looks like it’s ‘hanging’.

If using larger potatoes, you will need to make the lines further apart.

Cut the potatoes in half.

Use a paintbrush to cover the potato half in paint.

Stamp a bauble on the end of your hand-drawn string.

Repeat for different colours, stamping a circle at the end of each string.

Wait for the paint to dry.

Use white or a contrasting colour to add patterns to your baubles. Try Q-tip dots, flowers, or lines.

For thinner lines, use a fine brush or paint pen.
