Black cats are possibly the cutest Halloween characters out there (aside from our friends the rainbow bats, of course). These animals have a reputation as the bringers of bad luck, but I don’t believe that nonsense.

Every time I befriend a black cat I feel better, not worse. And even witches deserve a furry companion.

To make black cat art, I’ve adopted the popular cat scrape shape that’s been doing the social media circuit and Halloweenified it.

The cat’s eyes are our regular printable googly eyes, but we also have a set of Halloween printable eyes if you want to give your cats a different look.

Alternatively, you could draw the cat’s eyes on white paper with black marker and glue them on for an extra-personal touch.

To add the finishing touch to our drawing, I’ve used Posca pens. I’ve only recently discovered these at the suggestion of my teen daughter and love them. Previously, I’d tried a cheaper brand of paint pens and found they didn’t have an opaque finish on dark colour so I didn’t use them much.

If you have no Posca pens at home and don’t want to invest in any, you can paint in the detail using acrylic paint and a fine-tipped brush. The pens are easier for kids to use though and give an even line.

Lets get started …

How to make Black Cat Scrape Art

You will need:

  • Black acrylic paint. I’ve used Jo Sonja’s brand (commonly found in Australian art supply stores), but this brand has been recommended by some of my blogger friends who live in the USA for a decent opaque finish
  • Jumbo craft sticks
  • A sheet of paper googly eyes (or draw your own)
  • Glue stick. I always use UHU because it sticks the best.
  • Card stock in medium blue or purple (the black paint won’t stand out as much on the darker colours)
  • Posca pens in white and pink

How to:

Put a sheet of newspaper or similar under your card stock to catch the excess paint. This will be thrown away afterwards.

Put two curved lines of acrylic paint on your page. Make one slightly lower than the other for a big and small cat effect.

Use your craft stick to scrape the paint down the page. Use a clean craft stick to scrape the paint for the second cat.

If your scrape has gaps in it and doesn’t result in a solid cat shape, (this happened a couple of times when I tested this craft), you can scrape that section again.

You can see my cat’s ears are a bit lumpy in the pic above. I’m OK with imperfection (so I tell myself anyway), and kids probably won’t care if this happens.

Allow to dry.

Glue paper googly eyes onto each cat using a glue stick.

Draw in cat details using posca pen. Pink for the ears and nose. White for the mouth, whiskers, feet and legs.

Use the white posca pen to draw in stars and, optionally, a moon.
