Have a hoot with our Rocking Owl STEM craft! There are five owls in this set to make, based on species from North America, so kids can learn as they craft.

What’s your favourite owl?
I’m guessing lots of you will say the Snowy Owl. I get it, they are good-looking birds, and quite famous after being featured in Harry Potter.
But that’s not my favourite. The Barn Owl comes close, with its sweet heart-shaped face, but that’s not my favourite either.
I’m a Northern Spotted Owl girl.
Why, you ask? This bird is unassuming. He’s not a ‘look at me!’ kind of owl and he doesn’t pretend to be smart. He’s not featured in any movies (that I know of), nor does he have any horns or mesmerising, hypnotic eyes.
You could say he’s not special at all. But that’s what makes him so relatable and adorable in his own way.

Make the spotty owl and four of his feathered friends with this printable set. The five owls included are:
- Northern Spotted Owl
- Barn Owl
- Great Horned Owl
- Snowy Owl
- Great Grey Owl

To give the owls an accurate representation of their natural colours, you will need markers with a good range of browns, greys and yellow for the eyes. I found the Sharpie skin tone set (affiliate link) perfect for the browns. For the greys, I used my set of graphic markers.
This would make a fun research project for kids to find images and information about each owl.

Of course, you can make your owls any colour you like. Rainbow owls should definitely be a species too, right?
Age suggestion: 6+, but younger kids can make this with adult help.
Let’s get crafting …
How to make Rocking Owls
You will need:
- White card stock
- Markers for colouring
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- The Rocking Owl template, available from our printables store, and also on ETSY
How to:
Print the rocking owls out on card stock.

Colour the design.

Cut the shapes out.

Glue the front and back parts of the owl together by the top portion only, placing the glue on the back of the owl’s forehead.
Fold the joining strip along dotted lines, then glue this onto the inside of the rocker at the base to make it hold its shape.

Now rock and play!

Which one will you make first?
