Felt snail sewing craft for kids

Call them pests if you want, but I still think sails are adorable! Even more so when they’re made from felt.

You don’t need much material to make these cuties. In fact, this project is a good way to use up your felt scraps. You could glue a magnet or sew a pin to the back and turn your snail into a brooch or fridge magnet. Either would make a sweet DIY gift idea.

Fun fact: Most garden snails are hermaphrodites, and some species can live for around 15 years!

I imagine in that time, they’d chew through a lot of garden lettuce. Luckily, the felt variety gets all the nutrients they need from love, haha.

How to make a felt snail

You will need:

  • Soft felt in your choice of colours
  • Embroidery floss in colours to match the felt, plus black and pink for the face details
  • A small amount of stuffing
  • Craft glue
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Matching threads
  • Sharpie marker
  • The PDF template – enter your details in the form provided, and it will be sent via email

How To

Print the template out. Pin the paper shapes to felt (or use a small piece of double-sided tape). Cut the shapes out with the paper attached to the felt.

Note: the leaf pieces pictured below weren’t used in this craft. You do not need leaves.

Use black thread to sew a smiley mouth and two eyes to one of the body pieces. Sew two small cheek patches on for the cheeks using matching pink thread.

Use blanket stitch to sew the two body pieces together, leaving a gap for stuffing. Stuff the snail’s body.

Place the twirl/ spiral cutout on any one of the shell base cutouts. Prepare a needle with thread matching the twirl/ spiral.

Stitch along the edges to join the twirl cutout with the shell base. Alternatively, you can glue this piece on.

Note: glue is less fiddly and quicker, but it may not hold that well.

Sew the two shell pieces together using blanket stitch, leaving a small gap for stuffing.

Stuff the shell.

Close the opening with stitches once the stuffing is done.

Use craft glue to stick the snail shell to the body, or sew the pieces together if you prefer.
