Hair elastic wreath ornament

Hair elastic wreath ornament made using a loom band technique

If you like a craft activity that is just easy and doesn’t require too much thought, mess and effort then this one is for you. We used the basic loom band finger weaving technique to create some colourful wreath ornaments with hair elastics. My girls (aged 5 and 6) had no problem making these mostly by themselves but did need a little help with tying it up at the end and adding a ribbon.

To make this you will need:
• hair elastics in a range of colours – I bought a couple of sets with lots of elastics in each from a chemist for $4 per pack.
• ribbon
• string

How to:
We put the elastics into egg cartons to sort out the colours easily and as a way of storing it all.

If you already know how to make a finger loom band then you’re set but if you’ve never done it before here is a quick explanation.

wreath how-to

1) First twist an elastic like in the first image above and put one loop over each of two fingers.
2) Next add a second elastic and then lift each loop of the first one over each finger so it is now in the centre.
3) Add another elastic and repeat the second step as many times as you need to until your weaving is the right length.

Once you have finished tie the two ends together with string, leaving a loop on the end for hanging, and add a ribbon tied in a bow.

Your hair elastic wreath ornament is finished!

These add a nice splash of colour to a Christmas tree, but we hung ours on the same bunch of bare branches that we put our painted Christmas leaves on, and the girls are very proud!
