Rose Scrape Art is a gorgeous Spring craft that combines arty fun with cut-and-paste papercraft. These flowers look fancy but are very quick and easy to make!
Age suggestion is 6 and over (you don’t have to be a kid!), but younger kids could also make a rose with some adult help.
The finished blooms make beautiful garden-themed wall decorations.

Did you catch our tulip scrape art project last week? Scrape Painted Roses are part 2 in our flower art series.
You can get the full set of scrape art flower templates in a value bundle here.
The technique we’ve used to make these roses is similar to the tulips, but instead of scraping paint horizontally across a page, the scrape (and paint placement) is done in a circular motion.
It’s slightly more tricky than the straight scrape, but still simple and since the roses have an abstract feel so it’s no big deal if kids don’t manage to do a perfect job of their spiral scrape.
The finished flowers are beautiful and big! Hang them on the wall in a row to make a rose garden.

Spiral Scrape Painting Tips
I suggest using 2 colours that blend well plus white for your flowers. The white helps give the rose ‘petals’ some highlights. For the stems and leaves, two shades of green plus white will give you a beautiful, textural appearance.
Decent-quality art paper is essential for this project. Ours is A3 size. For paint scraping, we’ve used jumbo craft sticks. You could switch these out for recycled cardboard scraps if you have no craft sticks handy.
It’s a good idea to print the flower and leaf templates to card stock. This makes tracing around them easier, but paper will also work.
Note: Scrape art gets messy! Make sure you have plenty of newspaper (or similar) to cover the table surface.

How To
Create a swirl by squirting paint directly onto your paper in a spiral from the centre outward. Use 2-3 colours that blend well.

Place the craft stick at the centre of the spiral and scrape in a circular motion, following the spiral all the way to the edges of the page. You should be left with a rose-like pattern.

To create stems and leaves, squirt green and a little white paint in squiggles and lines on a page and scrape with a craft stick (or squeegee if preferred) across the page.

Allow scrape art to dry.
Print the rose, stem and leaf templates out. Cut out the shapes.
Place the half-rose shape directly over the centre of your spiral and trace around the circular edge. Flip the shape over, line it up with the first half and trace around it to get the full rose shape. Cut the rose out.

Trace the stem and leaf shapes onto green scrape art. You can create longer versions of the stem by tracing two stems joined together so they run the full length of the page. Cut the leaves and stems out.
Glue the stem to the back of the rose and one or two leaves to the stem to complete your roses.

Told you they were easy!
