Penguins are the cutest, right? 

That’s why we have lots of penguin crafts—see more at the end of this post. This penguin pattern art is my new favourite because of the rainbow pattern details. They make each character unique and stand out in a black-and-white crowd.

If you like the monochrome look, you could decorate your penguin in black marker doodle art instead.

This activity involves basic patterning, cutting, folding and gluing. 

Age recommendation is 8 and up. Older kids will be able to create more complex patterns. You could modify this activity for younger kids by turning it into a colour, cut and paste activity and leave out the 3D element. 

Card stock is recommended to print on.

How to make penguin pattern art

You will need

  • Card stock in white, black and blue (any shade of blue works)
  • Markers – either permanent ‘sharpie’ markers or regular kids washable markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Lead pencil
  • The penguin pattern art template, available from our printables store and TPT store
 

 

How to

Print the template out as per the instructions in the download.

Penguin pattern art template

Decorate the glue on penguin shapes: beanie, wings, tummy, feet and cheeks in doodle art patterns. Colour the beak in orange. Cut the shapes out.

Cut the penguin body shape out, then use a lead pencil to trace around it on black paper. Cut this out.

Cut the support strips out, then fold and glue into squares.

Glue the decorative details onto the black body.

Tear a sheet of white paper or card stock diagonally across to create snow for the penguin to stand on. Glue this onto your blue background.

Glue support strips onto the back of the penguin.

3D penguin pattern art steps

Glue the penguin with support squares over the snow.

Tear some of the scrap white paper into small pieces. Glue around the penguin to create falling snow.
