This 3D Art Doodle Art project is such a fun art idea for kids! The patterning aspect gives plenty of opportunity for kids to get creative and the finished result looks great hanging on the wall.
It’s perfect for a Woodland Animal theme, an Autumn or Halloween activity and for kids learning about Owls.

Owls are beautiful birds—unless you happen to be a field mouse! For the rest of us, they hold an almost magical appeal and are often portrayed as wise characters in children’s storybooks. They can also be a bit spooky, thanks to their infamous hooo, hooo call and the fact that they’re night time predators.
We’ve created an owl patterning project as part of our printable 3D doodle art collection for Autumn and Halloween season.
Kids can pattern their owl with bright, fun colours, or use halloween-ish tones to give the artwork a spooky vibe.

Older kids can use a combination of thick-tipped and fine-tipped markers to create more complex patterns, like I’ve done with the purple owl below.

It’s up to you!
The 3D element has been created using square support strips. It gives the artwork a bit of extra ‘pop’.

If you need patterning ideas, we have a free printable doodle art swatch sheet here.
This project involves colouring, doodling, cutting, folding and gluing. There is also an optional scoring step to make folding easier and more accurate. For this, we use a scoring tool (affiliate link), but you can also just use a blunt butter knife.
Age recommendation is 8 and up because patterning requires time, patience and attention to detail. The project could be simplified for younger kids by using the same template as a cut, colour-and-paste craft and eliminating the 3D element.
Card stock is recommended to print on but if you have none paper would also work.

How to create 3D Owl Doodle Art
You will need
- Card stock in white, dark blue or black, and a bright colour of your choice
- Markers – either Sharpie markers (affiliate link)or regular kids washable markers
- Scissors
- Glue stick – I always use UHU (affiliate link) because it sticks best
- Optional scoring tool or blunt butter knife, cutting mat
and ruler - The 3D Pattern Art Owl template, available from our printables store and TPT store
How to:
Print the owl details and support strips to white card stock and the body shape to a colour of your choice.

Decorate the owl details with doodle art patterns and colour in.

Cut the support strips out, then fold and glue them into squares. For folding accuracy, you can score the fold lines first using a ruler, cutting mat and scoring tool but this step is not essential.

Cut the owl body shape, wings and other details out.
Glue the branch and tail onto the bottom part of a backing sheet of card stock. The leaves will hang over the edge of your page.
Glue the stomach, feet and ears onto the body.
On the back of the eyes and beak, glue four support squares. Stick this into place.

On the back of the body, glue the remaining 8 support squares.

Glue into place so the owl appears to be sitting on the branch.

We love how they turned out!
