Valentines Day heart card idea

Make a marbled heart Valentine card to give to somebody special this Valentines Day.

This DIY Valentines card idea is perfect for kids of all ages and they will love the marble process art activity too.

Last year I bought my girls a marble art kit just for fun. Marbling is a “no rules” process art activity where you need absolutely no skill to create something really pretty, although there are traditional techniques and patterns you can try too. As marbling beginners I found that buying a kit was the easiest way to go because it includes everything you need and comes with instructions.

Finished marble art can be hung on the wall or worked into different crafts like bookmarks, cards, notebook covers etc. Last year we shared some gorgeous marble art Christmas Crackers, and today we’re using marble art to create some pretty DIY Valentines cards.

We’ll be sharing our experiences with marble painting with a full tutorial soon so stay tuned.

If you don’t want to spend money on a marbling kit you could always try the popular shaving cream and food colouring marbling process activity instead. In fact, any abstract process art activity would go well with this template.

The template includes three options for the inside with messages you can colour in, and one which is blank so you can write up your own message (it would also work great as a Mothers Day card).

Let’s make it…

How to make a marbled heart Valentine card

You will need

  • Finished marbled process art on heavy paper – we’ve used watercolour paper for ours
  • Scissors
  • Felt tip pens for colouring
  • Optional ribbon or bakers twine
  • Hole punch
  • The printable template printed onto card stock or heavy paper

How to:

  1. Colour in your chosen message or use the blank version and write your own.
  2. Cut the template shapes out.
  3. Place the two heart halves together over a pretty section of your marble art and trace around them. Take one half away and trace down the centre line.
  4. Cut the marbled halves out and glue them onto the tabs on the base template so the heart opens like a french door.
  5. Optionally, measure in a distance of approx 1.5cm  (2/3″) and place a light pencil dot near the centre line of each half. Punch a hole over each dot and use to thread ribbon or twine through and tie in a bow to close the card.
