This Egg Carton Christmas Tree is super simple to make and looks sooooo pretty hanging on the real tree.

This is part two in our Egg carton ornament series. See the Egg Carton Angels we shared last week here.

Egg cartons are very useful things, and not just for keeping eggs in! Over the years we’ve shared tons of egg carton crafts.
The problem is that one egg carton craft leads to another idea, then another and another, and you just can’t stop. Or is that just me?
After making the egg carton angels I shared last week, I didn’t want to throw the rest of egg carton I used away.
“Especially when the pointy part looks so much like a tree,” I thought. And with the addition of a scattering of skewer holes and an LED candle, it lights up just like a real tree too.

Awwwww. It looks good in the daytime, but even better after dark (this photo doesn’t really do it justice).
I used a plain white egg carton to make my tree, and since I wanted it to be white, I decided not to paint it. However, you can paint your egg carton tree any colour you choose.
Are you ready to get upcycling?
How to make an Egg Carton Tree
You will need
- An egg carton (preferably white but any colour will do)
- An LED tealight candle
- Gold card stock (or card stock in the colour you wish your star to be)
- Hot glue gun
- Gold thread or ribbon
- Good quality scissors that can cut through thick cardboard
- Skewer or pointy craft tool – I used a pointy tool that came in my craft knife hobby set, similar to this one here (affiliate link)
- Piece of pipe cleaner
How To
Cut a pointy piece from an egg carton and trim the edges.

Poke a hole in the top, then wiggle your skewer or pointy tool to make the hole larger.

Poke holes in all of the sides to create ‘tree lights’.

Snip a length of gold thread approximately 25cm long (10″). Fold in half and tie the ends in a knot to make a loop.
Bend your piece of pipe cleaner in half and use it like a needle threader. Thread the gold loop through the large top hole.

Cut a small star shape from your gold cardstock. Hot glue the star in place at the top of the tree.

Hot glue the LED candle to the lower inside rim of your tree ornament.

Switch the LED candle on to light the tree up.

Told you it was easy!

Now all that’s left to do is hang it on the tree.
