Create some simple, decorative yarn star ornaments for Christmas.

This is an easy, eco-friendly Christmas craft for kids using basic materials you most likely have at home (yarn, and sticks from the garden!).

These Christmas yarn star ornaments can be made with small or large sticks depending on your preference. Ours are oversized but they still look great hanging on the tree, adding a touch of rustic charm.

Whilst this craft is very easy, it does require some patience and fine motor dexterity to complete so I suggest it for kids aged 6 and up. If you are crafting with pre-schoolers or toddlers I’d recommend making these easy cardboard shape ornaments instead. Although my preschool-aged kids enthusiastically started this project I needed to finish their stars for them because they got tired of making them about half way through.

You could experiment with yarn of different textures and colours, or use more than one type of yarn on the one star. Be as creative as you like!

How to make wooly twig stars

You will need:

• wool
• twigs – 4 per star and not too thin or they might snap whilst crafting
• secateurs
• string for hanging
• wooden bead with a wide hole
• blu tack (sticky tack) – optional
• scissors

How to:

Trim the sticks with secateurs so that you have three the same length, and one a bit longer. This also helps remove any pointy ends.

Use a lump of blu tack (optional) to arrange the sticks into a star shape and hold it in place whilst getting started. This is helpful for kids but you could also manage without it, especially if crafting with older kids. Tie the centre tightly with yarn.

Wrap around the centre with yarn until it fells firmly in place, and then begin wrapping the yarn around the sticks.

Once you have finished winding the wool around the twigs wind the thread back up to the top of the vertical centre piece of the star. This is where you tie the loop at the top for hanging.

Tie the thread tightly at the end in a double knot, and then slide a bead on to the wool and fit it snugly onto the end of the twig. Your bead needs to have a wide hole so it can slide over the end tip of the twig.

Tie a piece of string on to the end of the wool in a loop for hanging, or if you like you could just use the wool itself to tie the loop at the end. You’re done!

Now hang them on the tree!
