Apple doodle art

Apple doodle art

Get creative with this apple doodle art project. This is a fun harvest-themed art idea for Autumn or Fall and is suitable for kids aged 7 and up. Younger kids may be able to do a simplified version of the project (say patterning with just one apple). Or cut out an apple shape and decorate it freestyle.

We’ve used our open-ended apple shape templates for this project.

Are you ready to create eye-catching apple art?

This set of printable apple templates can be used for any apple-shaped project you like. For today, we’re sticking to one of my favourites… doodle art!

Doodling—also known as zentangle art— is super easy and can be very meditative. Just pick a pattern and repeat it. Use coloured markers on white paper or black pens on coloured paper to get striking results. The thicker the marker, the quicker it will be to complete your pattern. Doodling is a great way to develop patience too.

The best thing about this art technique is you need no great artistic ability. ANYONE can doodle.

If you need pattern inspiration, we have a free printable doodle swatch sheet.

How to adapt apple doodle art to different age groups

  • For younger kids (7-9 year olds), use thick markers and less apple shapes (one or two large apples will do)
  • For older kids (9-11 year olds), try printing apples in different sizes and colours that they can arrange on a page and then decorate (like my examples)
  • If you’re working with teens or tweens, try using finer pens so they can create more detailed artwork.

However, this is just a guide and there are no real rules. You know your own child and their level of capability best.

In my example, I’m showing how to make a six apple picture, but change this up to suit yourself.

Glue two of each colour apple onto a black sheer of paper or cardstock. YOu can arrange them however you like, but I’ve gone for a straight, gridded pattern.

In each apple, draw a different pattern using your black marker.

That’s all there is to it!

Here are a couple more examples of finished apple art.

You can experiment with overlap and different pattern designs. Try dividing a large apple up with geometric lines and drawing a pattern in each section instead of keeping it to one pattern per apple.

Have fun doodling!
