Make an adorable crumpled paper butterfly craft! This makes a fun Spring or Summer themed craft for kids and is perfect for fine motor skill development.

What is it about butterflies? They are such delicate, vibrant critters and a wonderful theme to base a craft on.

We have made lots of butterfly crafts in the past because for a long time my girls loved butterflies! There were paper squish art butterflies, God’s eye style woven butterflies, super simple sponge printed butterflies, sparkly glitter peg butterflies and more. One of the girls even had an entire birthday party based on butterflies (including a butterfly cake and piñata)

Today Muhaimina Fiaz, the Craftaholic Witch, is showing us how to make some crumpled paper butterflies. Aren’t they cute?

It will require patience for kids to cut, crumple and stick the small pieces of paper onto the butterfly base to create their paper butterfly artwork. This is fantastic fine motor skill practice and can be quite relaxing too.

Paper butterfly craft supplies

  1. Colored craft paper
  2. Pencil or pen
  3. Scissors
  4. Craft glue

How to:

You can use scrap craft papers for this project. Select different colored craft papers and cut them into small square pieces.

Paper butterfly craft - step 1

Take one square paper at a time and crumple it into a small ball shape. Similarly, crumple the rest of the paper cut outs into small crumpled ball shapes.

Paper butterfly craft - step 2

The template includes 3 different sizes of butterfly. Trace any size you ant on a piece of paper and cut it out nicely using scissors.

Paper butterfly craft - step 3

Start to glue the crumpled paper balls on the cut out butterfly pattern. Mix and match different colors to give the butterfly a nice look.

Paper butterfly craft - step 4

Continue to glue the crumpled paper balls on the butterfly pattern until the whole butterfly pattern is filled. Once you are done gluing the crumpled paper balls on the butterfly pattern, let the glue dry for a while.

Paper butterfly craft - step 5

Take the round cut out and glue the 2 strips on any one side of it. Draw the face of the butterfly on the round paper and attach it on the butterfly.
