I love that these peg monsters are so bright and colourful – they are not at all scary!

My eldest daughter (who’s favourite book is The Hunger Games now), was utterly terrified of anything even remotely scary when she was younger and could barely get through most Disney movies. You would never guess it now, but she would hide behind the sofa or flee from the room whenever evil or “bad” characters came onto the screen.

How quickly they grow and change, right?

The materials needed for these peg monsters are basic and it’s likely that you have most of it already in your craft cupboard. I’ve used standard sized wooden clothes pegs (or clothespins if you in in the USA) rather than special crafting ones. 

You might be wondering how useful peg monsters would actually be. Well, the answer is very useful…

Possible uses for peg monsters

• Peg your finished monsters onto things to decorate for Halloween (like a fruit bowl, or a bowl of treats)
• Stick a magnet onto the back with a hot glue gun to make quirky, decorative peg magnets
• Peg it to a Monster Joke and add it to your child’s school lunch to make them smile at lunch time
• Or, you could fill small treat bags to give away as mini Halloween gifts and peg them shut with a monster

Easy peg monster craft for kids

You will need:

• Wooden pegs (clothespins)
• Yarn – for best affect use different textures and colours but any will do
• Pipe cleaners
• Googly eyes — or use our free printable paper eyes for a more eco-friendly version
• Acrylic paints
• Plastic beads
• Gel pens
• Tacky craft glue – regular glue usually isn’t strong enough to hold a yarn pom pom

How to:

1. Paint your pegs in bright colours and allow to dry
2. Wrap some yarn around your fingers. I’ve wrapped it around three of my fingers, but a child might need to wrap it around four. Once you have a nice sized bundle (no specific size, anything goes really) slide it off your fingers and tie a separate piece of yarn around the centre tightly in a double knot.
3. Use your scissors to trim the looped ends on either end of the yarn bundle giving you a thin pom pom.
4. Apply glue to the inside top of your peg, and stuff the bundle of yarn in so that the pom pom ends are sticking out like hair. Once the glue dries you will still be able to open and close the peg even with the yarn glued in there.
5. Cut a pipe cleaner in half and poke it through the spring in the centre of the peg. Thread a plastic bead onto each end of the pipe cleaner to make hands and twist the pipe cleaner ends back around themselves so the beads stay in place.
6. Glue either one or two googly eyes on the front, and draw a mouth with gel pen.

My daughter loves to use these monsters as monster dolls. They’re “friendly monsters” and they live in a little fairy house we made from a paper bag.
