These smiling happy flowers make a perfect flower craft idea for Spring. You could use them as puppets or put them in a small jar to decorate and brighten up the room. They would also make sweet kid-made Mothers’ Day gifts.
Wooden teaspoons are meant for eating with but, really, when I buy them it’s always for the craft box. In the past we’ve used them to make Rainbow Fairies (from the popular Rainbow Magic book series), and fairy castles for small world play. I’ve always imagined many other possibilities for these wooden spoons though, and have kept them locked away in the craft cupboard where they have been waiting for their “one day” to come. Well, they are waiting no longer! I’ve used them this week to create some very happy flowers, and I think the spoons are happy about that because they’ll be put in the toy box instead of the trash.
If you read our blog you’ll know that we are Australian, and being Australian means it’s not technically Spring here, but Autumn. Still, our Autumn weather is sunny and warm (best time of year really) and our garden is filled with flowers and butterflies. So this flower craft idea is appropriate for us too even though it is not our Spring.
How to make Happy Flowers
You will need:
• Our printable flower template
• Disposable wooden teaspoons
• Felt
• Acrylic paint
• Ballpoint pens (or gel pens)
• Lead pencil
• Tacky craft glue
• Scissors
How to:
- Paint your wooden spoon so it has a green stem and a yellow rounded end and allow to dry.
- Use your template to cut out the flower shapes from felt.
- Place the flowers so that the smaller one sits on top of the larger one, then place the spoon on top. This is to gauge where to put the slit for the spoon so that the round part sits in the middle of the petals.
- Hold the two flowers together and gently fold them in half, then cut a small slit in the place where it needs to be towards the bottom of the smallest flower.
- Thread the spoon (once the paint has completely dried) through the slit.
- Use lead pencil to draw a happy face on your flower, and when you are happy with it go over it in ballpoint pen.
- Glue the felt flowers to each other and to the back of the spoon with tacky craft glue.
