It can be hard to separate kids from their technology. Even when surrounded by nature, they can’t resist pulling out their phones.

This nature photo scavenger hunt incorporates the best of both worlds — technology and outdoor time — and we’ve added in some creative thinking as well.

The prompts encourage appreciation of the natural environment by taking a close look and capturing interesting details in a photograph.

Have you ever noticed how many natural heart shapes there are in nature? Or linear patterns? There are loads of rocks, but what makes one interesting?

Nature scavenger hunt photograph challenge

You can complete this activity in a garden, park, or anywhere where there is an abundance of trees, plants, flowers and rocks.

How to Complete the Nature Photo Scavenger Hunt

You will need:

  • A smartphone, digital camera or tablet
  • A pencil or pen to tick off your finds
  • The printable scavenger hunt (comes three to a page). Enter your details in the subscription box below and a copy will be sent to your email address

How to:

Print out the list and head outdoors. Locate as many items as you can in a natural environment and take a photograph of them.

You can turn this into a race, or make it more relaxed by encouraging kids to take their time and make their photographs as interesting and creative as possible.

That’s all there is to it!

For the examples below, I used my iPhone and found all of the prompts in our garden (although I cheated on the insect one and used a moth photo from way back in my camera roll).

I had fun completing this challenge, which just goes to show you don’t need to be a kid to enjoy a scavenger hunt, haha.

Optional: When you’re done, use a collage app to put the images into a grid for social media. I use one called LiveCollage for this purpose, but there are probably tons of options if you search the app store. If you share your snaps on Instagram, tag @thecrafttrain so I can see them too.

Have fun!
