Rock Cakes for Pretend Play

If you have a little one at home who enjoys pretend tea parties, perhaps they would like a few rock cakes to add to their game. These are pretty VERY easy to make, and as  obvious as it looks, I’m about to tell you how I made them for 5 year old Miss K, who spends many happy hours absorbed in her elaborate “cafe” pretend play games.

You will need:

• Rocks (we collected our lovely round stones from the roadside)
• Nail polish (nail varnish), or acrylic/poster paint would also work
• Sparkles to decorate
• Tacky craft glue (or regular PVA/school glue if you don’t have any of that)

How to:

Wash your rocks well with soapy water to get all the dirt off (that is if you picked them up from the side of the road like we did). Once they are dry paint a blob of “icing” on the top with nail polish, allow to dry and then paint on a second coat.

Once the second coat is dry you are all good to go for some “sprinkles”. Add a coat of the glue and sprinkle with your glitter or sequins. The reason I added glue instead of simply sprinkling the sparkles directly on top of the nail polish is that it gives it an extra glossy, protective coating and the nail polish is far less likely to come off, plus the sparkles stick better to glue.

Once the glue and sprinkles dry there you have it… lovely, sparkly, tasty-looking rock cakes.

Yum! They make a fab addition to our toy kitchen cupboard, and are one of the most popular items on the menu at Miss K’s cafe.
