Eggs are super versatile as a crafting theme because there are so many ways to colour and pattern them. In the past we’ve turned paper egg shapes into fluffy chick cards, Easter character puppets and process art pattern eggs.

This time we’re giving our paper eggs the doodle art treatment!

Our spinning egg decoration printable includes 8 pre-designed panels that can be used either as a doodle art prompt or treated as a colour, cut-and-paste craft.

In examples below, the egg on the left has been coloured in as is. The egg on the right has been added to with pattern art.

Here are over 40 Pattern Art Projects for Kids

Our egg tails are strung with pony beads (like these ones on Amazon) and the extra paper shapes provided in the template.

The beads give the paper ornament weight so it spins better. You can leave the beads out if you don’t have any, but be aware that your egg may not spin as well if you do.

Card stock is recommended for printing, but paper will also work.

Let’s get making …

How to make a Spinning Egg Decoration

You will need:

  • Card stock in white – 3 sheets per egg
  • Markers for colouring and doodling. You can use permanent “sharpie” markers or regular kids washable markers, plus optional fine-tipped pens for more detailed patterns
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • String
  • Pony beads
  • The Spinning Egg Decoration Template, available in our printables store and TPT store

How to:

Colour and decorate any 4 egg panels.

Cut the individual rectangles around the eggs out.

Optionally, score the egg fold lines by using a ruler and scoring tool to create an indent where the egg should be folded.

Fold each egg shape using the dotted guidelines above and below each egg.

Tie a loop in the top of a piece of string. Stick the string into the centre of the egg decoration with a piece of sticky tape before gluing the final 2 panels closed to create the 3D egg.

Thread pony beads onto the end of the string below the egg. In between the pony beads, glue the two decorative shapes you have chosen. At the end of the string, tie a final pony bead in place with a secure double or triple knot.

Now suspend it somewhere where it can catch a gentle breeze to watch it twirl and whirl in the wind! A hook from the roof in an undercover outdoor area or balcony works.
