Simple glitter peg butterflies

glitter peg butterflies
Sometimes the crafts we make are dictated by the kids, and this was one of those times. Miss R found some plain wooden pegs on the craft table that I had planned to use for something else and told me she was going to “make something with these”. She decided that the “something” was going to be a butterfly, and that it would need to be sparkly. We are enjoying the last of the Autumn warmth for the year here so we decided to go outside and we all sat down to make some simple, sparkly butterflies. This is a very easy craft and my kids, being 4 and 5, could do this mostly by themselves with just a little help on the fiddly bits.

butterflies-iYou will need:
• Clothes pegs (wooden is best)
• Pipe cleaners
• Tissue paper
• PVA (school) glue
• Loose glitter
• paint brushes
• Scissors

How to:

Use the paint brush to cover the front panel of the peg with glue. If your child decides to cover the whole thing with glue then that’s OK too. Hold the peg over a small dish or container filled with loose glitter and sprinkle it on, letting the dish catch most of the spilled glitter. This is another very good reason to do this craft outside.

Fold the tissue paper pieces in half and cut the wings into a stylised butterfly shape (I did this part). I stacked a few different colours on top of each other and cut them all out at once, because we wanted to make lots of butterflies.

Scrunch an unfolded sheet of the tissue paper in the middle and twist a pipe cleaner around it. Then simply stick this whole pice inside the peg so it looks like the body of the butterfly.

Paint a few dots of glue on to the wings and the tips of the antennae, sprinkle with glitter and leave until it dries.

This is the butterfly Miss 4 made drying in the sun.

So pretty!

The girls played butterfly games with their finished creatures, and then we hung them on the wall above their desk with a bit of blu-tack. You can also hang them on the window with blu-tack to catch the sunlight in their wings.
