Mother’s Day is just around the corner. What better way for kids to show their love and appreciation than with a printable Mother’s Day teapot card?
Lift the lid on the teapot to reveal a cute photograph or Mother’s Day message.
Mother’s Day wouldn’t be Mother’s Day without adorable kid-made cards and gifts, would it?
Our latest template makes it easy to create a teapot card for the tea-moving Mum (or Mom, Nana, Gran or whatever you call them!). And even if they don’t love tea, they’ll love this potful because it will have their baby inside, ready to burst out with a smile or a Happy Mother’s Day message!
For the example cards I’ve used cute stock photos because my girls are teens now and they’d probably murder me in my sleep if I put photos of them in teapots and shared them on the internet, haha. But for grade-school kids, this is great.
It’s best suited to ages 8+ because of the fiddly elements involved and the patience needed (although they are very easy to make!). Younger kids would probably be able to make them with some help from an adult.
To decorate the teapot, we’ve used a Q-tip printing technique. This is optional and feel free to get creative with it. We’ve created ‘daisy’ prints, groups of three dots, and straight polka dot patterns as examples.
The back of the card has a space for kids to write what makes their mother “Tea-riffic”.
Ready to make it? Here’s how.
How to make a Mother’s Day teapot card
You will need:
- Card stock in white, pink and whatever colour you want the teapot to be
- Glue stick
- Scissors
- Paint and Q-tips
- Coloured markers, pencils, crayons, etc.
- Personalised headshots (if making the photo version)
- The printable template, available in our printables shop as well as our TPT store
How to:
Print the template out following the instructions in the download.
Cut out the teapot shapes. Fold the back in half vertically so that you can cut along the photo/message slit line, then unfold.
Make the inside.
For the message version: Colour the message in. Make it look snazzy with extra patterns (optional). Cut the shape out.
For the photo version: Print a head shot photograph to card stock. It should be around a quarter of a US Letter or A4 page in size. If you’re working on this project with a whole class, I suggest taking head shots against a white wall or backdrop and printing them out four to a page. If your photos are zoomed out too far, crop them so the head and shoulders fits a quarter page.
Cut the shape template out and place it over the top of the head shot. Align the top of the shape with the top of the head, approximately where a hat would sit (the teapot lid becomes the hat when you glue it on). Trace around the shape in lead pencil and cut it out.
Slide the top of the photo or message through the slit on the teapot ‘inside’ piece (going upwards from the base). Glue the lid to the top once the photo or message is in position. Test the sliding mechanism.
Glue the inside to the back of the teapot shape, placing glue in the area marked on the template.
Cut the heart shapes out, fold and glue back-to-back to make a 3D heart. Glue to the front of the teapot.
Decorate the teapot with Q-Tip prints. Plain polka dots is easiest, but older kids can try patterning them in different ways.
Write in the “Tea-riffic” message panel and cut it out. Glue to the back of the card after the paint is dry on front.
All done!
