Kids will have fun making this cheerful pop up book for Mothers Day. This printable craft is easy to put together and has fill in the blank spaces so that the book can be personalised with each child’s creative responses about their own mother.

Mum is going to love it! (or Mom, or Nana, or Grandma)

When I think about it, the person who has had the most profound influence on my life is my Mum. Even now I’m in my 40’s she is still one of the first people I turn to if I’m feeling worried or stressed about something, and I know she won’t think worse of me if I complain about things I’m finding tough. She still cooks a lovely roast dinner when we come to visit, and she’s still just a phone call away if ever I need her.

Every mothers day I thank her for all this with a gift and a card which usually says “Happy Mothers Day”.

I don’t think I’ve ever thanked her for being my personal phone call advice line, or told her that her helpfulness makes the world a better place for me. She probably doesn’t know that that time we burned the cherry pie and went out for chocolate instead is one of my favourite memories. I’ve never put those things in words before.

This pop up card idea, which is really a pop up book, has fill-in-the-blank spaces so that kids can tell their Mum about the things which mean the most to them.

Of course, you might be a mother looking for something for your own mother, so we haven’t forgotten the Grandparents here. The printable template includes different covers for different ways to say and spell “Mom”, and grandparent options as well as blank so you can write your own.

The popup is just a basic fold, cut and pop-out tab with a different graphic to glue to each tab. It’s so easy to make!

How to make a pop-up Mothers Day book

You will need:

The printable template, also available in our TPT store
White paper (6 sheets per book)
A sheet of coloured paper for the cover (one per book)
Scissors
Glue stick
Colouring pencils, crayons or felt tip pens

How to:

1) Print first six pages to white paper. If you are making the card for a grandparent skip the sixth page and print the 7th instead. Print the cover page (the last page in the template document) to coloured paper.

2) Colour in the pop-up graphics, then cut them out. For the heart and flower graphics there is no definite black outline to cut around so just cut loosely around the edges.

3) Select one describing word or phrase for the final page of the pop-up book (this is to describe what the child hopes Mum’s mothers day will be like), then colour and cut out.

4) Cut the page templates along the black lines to separate into individual pages.

5) Fold each page in half, the cut the black lines of the pop-up strip whilst folded. Fold this strip first one way, then back the opposite way. Unfold the page, then fold back in the opposite direction so the writing is on the inside, “popping” the strip inward so it pops up when you open the page. This becomes the pop-up tab to stick the corresponding page graphic to.

6) Glue each graphic to the pop-up tab on the appropriate page, and fill in the blank.

7) Cut out the coloured cover and fold along both black lines (the double fold can be a little bit fiddly).

8) Assemble the pop-up book. Glue the top of the first pop-up page to the inside of the cover, and then glue the top of the second page to the bottom of the first. Repeat until all six pages have been glued. Glue the back cover to the bottom of the sixth page.

9) Colour the “Mum” graphic, cut out and glue in place on the front.
